🍂 A Little Taste of Autumn: Pumpkin Scones with a Hint of Nutmeg

There’s something about autumn that feels like a soft quilt wrapped around your shoulders — a season stitched together with golden leaves, gentle light, and the comforting scent of something baking in the oven.

In our kitchen at Angelic Feathers, we cherish those moments when the world slows down — when the kettle hums, the air is sweet with spice, and every breath feels like a warm hug. That’s where these Pumpkin Scones with a Hint of Nutmeg were born — tender, golden scones inspired by the colours and comforts of the season.

Made with real pumpkin, sustainably sourced ingredients, and a touch of nutmeg (that whisper of warmth we all love), these scones are the very essence of homemade comfort. They rise beautifully, soft and inviting, ready to be shared over a pot of tea or wrapped in linen as a thoughtful gift — a simple, heartfelt way to say “I made this for you.”

🧡 Ingredients

  • 2 cups (250g) self-raising flour

  • ¼ cup (50g) brown sugar

  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg

  • ¼ tsp ground ginger (optional)

  • A pinch of salt

  • 60g cold unsalted butter, cubed

  • ¾ cup (180g) mashed pumpkin, well-drained and cooled

  • ¼ cup (60ml) milk (plus extra for brushing)

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

To Serve (optional but delightful): whipped cream or clotted cream, a drizzle of honey or maple syrup, and a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar.

🌾 Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°C (fan 180°C). Line a baking tray with parchment paper.

  2. Prepare your pumpkin: roast or steam until tender, then mash and cool completely. Drain any excess moisture for tender scones.

  3. Combine dry ingredients: sift together the flour, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and salt in a large bowl.

  4. Rub in the butter using your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.

  5. Mix wet ingredients: whisk together the pumpkin, milk, egg, and vanilla in a jug until smooth.

  6. Gently combine wet and dry ingredients, taking care not to overwork the dough.

  7. Turn dough onto a floured surface, pat to 2.5cm thickness, and cut into rounds or wedges.

  8. Brush tops with a little milk and place on the baking tray, leaving space between them.

  9. Bake for 15–18 minutes, or until risen and lightly golden.

  10. Cool slightly and serve warm — perfect with cream, honey, or simply enjoyed as they are.

💫 A Little Magic Tip

Sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg sugar over the scones before baking for an irresistible, fragrant finish.

🌿 A Moment to Savor

As the scones cool and the scent of nutmeg lingers in the air, take a quiet moment to savour the simple joys — the kind that remind us of home, of love, and of care woven into every small thing we do. Just like our quilts and keepsakes, these pumpkin scones are a gentle reminder that the most beautiful things are often handmade, shared, and filled with heart.

Because when something is crafted with love, it’s never just a recipe — it’s a memory in the making. 🍯✨
